Red Sox vs Dodgers

Red Sox vs Dodgers: The 2018 World Series is finally upon us, as the Boston Red Sox host the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 from Fenway Park on Tuesday at 8:09 p.m. ET. Boston is at -150 on the money line in the latest Red Sox vs. Dodgers odds, meaning you would need to bet $150 to win $100; wagering $100 on Dodgers at +123 wins $123. The Dodgers squeaked into the postseason but were installed as favorites to win the National League pennant. They did just that by going through Atlanta and Milwaukee. Boston won 108 regular-season games and went 7-2 in the American League playoffs, dispatching the Yankees and the defending champion Astros. But are the Red Sox worthy Game 1 favorites? Before you lay any Red Sox vs. Dodgers picks of your own, there’s no better expert out there than Adam Thompson.

SportsLine’s top-ranked MLB handicapper is on a season-long MLB picks streak that has fattened the wallets of those following him. He is on an astonishing 170-110 money line run, hitting on 61 percent of his MLB picks and paying out more than $3,700 to $100 bettors following him. Since Sept. 8 alone, he’s an astonishing 23-8 MLB picks streak.

Thompson, who covered major sports for 20 years as a writer and columnist before joining SportsLine, cites deeply researched stats and trends you likely haven’t considered to build his astonishing streak — not to mention watching as much action as possible. Thompson has also shown a strong knowledge on how both of these teams work, going a combined 31-15 on games involving Los Angeles or Boston.

Thompson knows it’s hard to go against either one of the Game 1 starters. In a matchup worthy of the World Series, three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw goes against seven-time All-Star Chris Sale.

The Red Sox have never faced Kershaw (9-5, 2.73), a matchup that usually favors the pitcher. While Kershaw has been maligned for postseason struggles, in reality he has been OK. His career record is only 8-7, but batters are just .210 against him with a tiny 1.06 WHIP.

Overall, the Dodgers’ offense was a success on the road, averaging 5.4 runs (No. 2 in MLB) and hitting .258 (No. 5). The team is hitting just .218 in the playoffs but has received clutch hits when needed. Manny Machado leads L.A. in the postseason with three home runs, nine RBI and seven runs scored. Yasiel Puig, who hit a three-run homer in Game 7 against Milwaukee on Saturday, is batting .333.

Sale (12-4, 2.11) is 100 percent healthy after being hospitalized last week with an illness. He has made opposing lineups ill at Fenway Park, holding them to a .202 average.

Boston’s offense was the best in baseball in the regular season, and was an especially tough out at home, batting .282 with a MLB-best 5.8 runs per game. The hitting actually stepped up in the postseason, as the Sox batted .284 with 6.2 runs per contest. Sox DH/outfielder J.D. Martinez had an MVP-quality season by hitting .330 with 43 home runs and 130 RBI, and hasn’t lagged these playoffs. He’s hitting .313 with two homers and nine RBI. Jackie Bradley Jr. also has two home runs and nine RBI and Andrew Benintendi has scored nine times.

We can tell you Thompson likes the Under 7.5 runs in this matchup, and he’s also identified several critical x-factors he believes point to a strong value on one side of the money line.

So who wins Dodgers-Red Sox, and what are the critical x-factors that have Thompson siding strongly to one side? Visit SportsLine now to find out Adam Thompson’s World Series Game 1 pick, all from an expert crushing the sportsbooks on MLB picks, including going 31-15 on games involving these teams and 23-8 overall since Sept. 8.

World Series 2018

BOSTON — When the 2018 World Series begins Tuesday night, many Dodgersplayers will get their first taste of playing in historic Fenway Park. Fenway Park has been home to the Red Sox over a century now, but many Dodgers players are quite young, and they don’t visit often during interleague play.

Ninety-eight total games. Machado is of course the leader thanks to all his time with the AL East rival Orioles. Dozier played parts of seven seasons with the Twins made an annual visit to Boston. Otherwise it’s a few games here and a few games there. Austin Barnes, Cody Bellinger, Enrique Hernandez, Joc Pederson, and Yasiel Puighave never played in Fenway Park.

Playing in Fenway can be intimidating because of the crowd and the coziness (and the cold), but, more than anything, it can be a difficult place to play because the outfield is so unique. There’s the Green Monster in left field, the triangle in center, and the Pesky Pole and rounded corner in right. There will be plenty of opportunities for misplays, and misplays mean extra bases.

Players on the Dodgers’ roster have three games worth of outfield experience at Fenway Park, all by Kemp back in 2010, when he roamed center field an interleague series. Manager Dave Roberts said Kemp will be the DH in Games 1 and 2, so none of the team’s actual outfielders have experience playing the outfield a Fenway. (Taylor played short in his three games at Fenway with the 2014 Mariners.)

With left-handers Chris Sale and David Price on the mound in World Series Games 1 and 2, respectively, Roberts is likely to use Taylor in left, Bellinger in center, and Puig in right with Freese at first base. Once the bullpen comes into play the lefty hitting Pederson will pinch-hit for the righty hitting Taylor. That has been the Dodgers’ strategy against lefty starters this postseason. Hernandez could also see outfield time as well.

Left field is probably the toughest outfield spot to play at Fenway Park because it can be real difficult to read whether the ball will reach the Green Monster, and play the carom. Andrew McCutchen, who has limited left field time to begin with, misplayed a ball off the wall in the ALDS, and the shortstop Didi Gregorius had to retrieve it in left. Check it out:

That’s the risk at Fenway Park if you don’t know how to play the wall. The ball gets an away and extra bases are taken. In right field, a hard-hit grounder can hook around the corner and sneak by the right fielder, and just keep rolling. Several would-be singles have turned into doubles and triples thanks to that hard-to-play corner.

For all intents and purposes, the Dodgers are going in blind here. Bellinger, Pederson, Puig, and Taylor have never played the outfield at Fenway Park. They familiarized themselves with the outfield and worked on all those tricky caroms during Monday’s workout day, but that’s only one day of work, and there is no substitute for game action.

There are going to be balls hit off the wall at Fenway Park during the World Series. That’s just the way it is. That’s baseball. The Dodgers’ ability to play the ball cleanly in the outfield and limit those extra bases could very well be the difference in the series.

Juventus vs Manchester United

Juventus vs Manchester United: It has been quite a few years since Juventus faced Manchester United in something other than a meaningless friendly. Even though they’ve been two of the biggest names in European football for decades on decades now, the amount of history the two have together in recent years has more to do with transfer market dealings rather than on-field happenings.

Juventus’ winning streak in all competitions is now going to be referred to as an unbeaten streak in all competitions thanks to the 1-1 draw with Genoa over the weekend. Those are mere technicalities because I think we can all agree that it’s a fact that Juventus wouldn’t have lost the game if they didn’t serve as their own worst enemy. Juventus often battles Juventus and the unfortunate things that come along with that.

We don’t exactly know what state of mind that this edition of Manchester United is in. But I feel pretty safe in saying that if Juventus does those Juventus-like shenanigans that we saw Saturday night, then it might not be just a second straight game where a possible Juve wins turns into a Juve draw.

I guess what I’m trying to say is this:

  • If the Juventus we saw in the last couple of games before the international break shows itself, then things will go according a lot of our respective plans. But…
  • If the Juventus we saw against Genoa that can’t get a second goal and then shoots itself in the foot with some boneheaded mistakes, then Group H is about to get that much more interesting at the midway point of the group stage.

No matter what kind of form Manchester United enters this game in — and it’s not like their 2-2 draw against Chelsea over the weekend gave us a lot of hints as to where they currently stand — a win at Old Trafford could go a long way in making the next three group stage games that much more of an advantage for Max Allegri. He will know that his team will have two of the return group fixtures played in Turin, with the possibility of nine points out of a full nine potentially being in the squad’s back pocket as well.

There’s the storylines of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to his old home where he made his name. There’s Paul Pogba facing the club where he burst onto the scene for the first time. There’s the fact that more than just a couple of people are now talking about Juventus as the favorites to win the whole damn Champions League rather than a sleeper that could do damage if they get into the knockout round.

Another storyline that I’d love to be talking about come a couple of hours after kickoff?

How Juventus is nearly in the knockout phase with three group stage games left to go.

If that doesn’t sound like something that’s appealing, then you can go back to talking about Paul Pogba-to-Juventus transfer rumors if you’d like. I’ve got a couple of Twitter feeds who will eat that kind of stuff up for you.

The big injury news on Monday was that Mario Mandzukic was suddenly unavailable due to an injury he suffered in training.

Juventus also are down to zero healthy German midfielders.

Let’s just hope those tests that Emre Can will be undergoing soon come back with some good news because the lack of midfield depth will come back to bite soon, I’m sure.

Just as it does at a lot of big clubs, the No. 7 is one of the kit numbers that has special meaning. At both Juventus and Manchester United, that’s exactly the case.

There will be plenty of nostalgia in the air when Ronaldo takes the Old Trafford field prior to the Champions League anthem blaring over the stadium PA system. And I would like to think that there will still be a few of the Ronaldo No. 7 United jerseys being worn knowing that their former young star is now back after he left for Spain a decade ago.

No matter what the feelings and memories running through the 40,000-something fans Tuesday night, this is going to be true: This is exactly the kind of European game that Juventus brought Ronaldo in for this summer.

Of course, facing big clubs in Europe — yeah, yeah, I know United a struggling again this season but they’ve still got massive cache — is something we also want to still be talking about come March, April and May. But, along the same lines of the trip to Valencia last month, is a big test away from home against a solid opponent where Juve’s lofty European aspirations will be put to the test.

And as long as Ronaldo doesn’t get any unwarranted red cards…

But when you think about what Juventus want to do in the Champions League this season, it is obviously going to start with their new No. 7 that has been one of the best players ever in this same competition. And, honestly, what better place for him to show just how dangerous his new club can be than where he established himself as one of the best in the world during his time in England?

Manchester United thirst for Paulo Dybala to wear their jersey. If you don’t believe me, you can find something on the matter on YouTube here. Or here. Or here. Or here.

Dybala will likely make his return to Juventus’ starting lineup Tuesday night.

What kind of formation Allegri will end up using is still to be seen.

In his press conference Monday night, Allegri said that he will be using a back four and try to match United’s numbers in the midfield even though he has just three central midfielders — Miralem Pjanic, Blaise Matuidi and Rodrigo Bentancur — available to him. But, as we know, sometimes what Max says at his press conference doesn’t always turn out to be what happens when the starting lineup is announced an hour before kickoff.

Sky Sport Italia floated out the idea of a three-man defense with Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli as well as Juan Cuadrado in a central midfield role. That’s … interesting to say the least and maybe a little nerve-wrecking since the big match with talented attacking players isn’t necessarily where you want to see Barzagli appearing in these days.

Other Italian media outlets have gone with the four-man backline, leading to a 4-4-2 setup — which makes sense based on the lack of option in the center of the park.

No matter what, though, Allegri still has options even though there is no Mandzukic due to injury. Don’t worry, though, you know damn well Mr. No Good will be screaming at his television back in Turin the second that ball is kicked off at Old Trafford.

3) Just what side of Manchester United will show up

For the sake of the argument, here is Juventus’ form in all competitions the past six games:

United’s season has been full of drama. Lots and lots and lots of drama. Some of it has to do with what they’ve been unable to do on the field. Maybe just as much of it has to do with the guy who’s filling out the team sheet before every game and the attention that he brings to everything he does.

No matter what, though, this United, no matter how many big transfer moves they’ve made and who Jose Mourinho has available to him, has come nowhere close to the potential it has on paper.

That’s the thing about this team these days. You see the names they have, the talent on their roster — at least in midfield, in attack and who they have starting for them between the sticks — and think about just how good they could be. But they aren’t. United, on top of their recent form the last few weeks, have just been a mess from the start of the season. And it’s not like there are signs that things are getting better.

There are probably people who are surprised that Mourinho made it to the first group stage meeting with Juventus. Based on how United started the season, I’m probably going to fall in that camp. But he’s still around, still getting in sideline dust-ups, still being … Mourinho.

And, for all we know, that could work out perfectly for Juventus come Tuesday night.

Man United vs Juventus

Man United vs Juventus: Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly told forward Anthony Martial he will start Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League showdown with Juventus.

The France international has been in excellent form of late, following up his goal against Newcastle United at Old Trafford in a 3-2 win with a brace on Saturday in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

According to RMC Sport (h/t Andrew Gilpin of the Daily Mirror), Mourinho has told Martial he will be involved on Tuesday when the Italian champions come to town. It’s said that Alexis Sanchez, who has been battling for a spot on the left flank since his arrival at the club in January, is struggling to be fit for the clash with Juventus.

RMC Sport also reported Martial is ready to sign a new contract despite speculation about his future throughout the summer. The 22-year-old became the then-most expensive teenager in the history of the game when he signed for the Red Devils from Monaco in 2015.

Per Simon Peach of the Press Association, Mourinho said he is pleased with the way his No. 11 is operating at the moment:

As relayed by Gilpin, recently the forward dismissed speculation that he and Mourinho fell out during the summer.

“Come on. Things were not tense between us to begin with,” he said. “We have a player-coach relationship, and I hope that we will continue like that and bring Manchester United as much as possible.”

Martial enjoyed a brilliant debut season with United but has failed to find similar levels of consistency in subsequent campaigns. However, in recent weeks there have been signs of the winger finding his best once again.

Against Chelsea he was sensational in the second period, netting an equaliser following a brilliant touch and finish before curling home a sumptuous second. He’s now on three goals for the season and has been the team’s most regular goalscorer since his arrival:

While Martial has made some big contributions to the Red Devils cause of late, the showdown with Juventus represents another major step up for him.

The Italian champions head into this fixture after a brilliant beginning to the campaign, winning both of their Champions League matches and taking 25 points from a possible 27 in Serie A. United, despite improvements recently, do appear to still have issues to resolve throughout their side

If Martial can inspire United to a win here, it would potentially trump everything he’s done in his Old Trafford career to date.

Giants vs Falcons: The NFL Week Seven schedule wraps up with Monday Night Football as the NY Giants visit the Atlanta Falcons at 08:15 p.m. ET in a matchup of teams desperate to turn their 2018 seasons around.

The Atlanta Falcons are four-point favorites and the over-under for all points scored is set at fifty three in the latest Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Giants odds. Before you make your Atlanta and Green Bay picks, listen to what SportsLine expert R.J. White has to say.

Here,The renowned prognosticator has cashed big in the prestigious Las Vegas SuperContest 2 of the last 3 years.White was SportsLine’s most profitable NFL analyst last season and returned $100 bettors a profit of nearly $2,000.

White has a strong history of success in handicapping these teams, which includes an impressive 27-13 mark on picks involving the Falcons. Anyone who has followed him is way, way up.

Just last week, White advised SportsLine members that Atlanta would have too much firepower for NFC South foe bucs and pull away in a shootout. Atlanta Falcons did just that, and anyone who followed White’s recommendation notched another winner.

Now,he has scrutinized Giants and Falcons from every possible angle to reveal a strong point-spread pick that he’s sharing at SportsLine.

White knows both clubs are looking for answers as they remained mired in disappointing seasons that appear bound to fall short of lofty projections.

The Falcons (2 wins-4 losses) were co-favorites in the NFC South along with the Saints, while the Giants (1 wins -5 losses) were a trendy pick to possibly unseat the Eagles in the NFC East. Instead, both teams find themselves in last place.New York has been felled by an inept offense and questions surrounding the viability of veteran Eli Manning at quarterback amid his fading production.

The NY Giants gained 401 yards of total offense in their loss to the Eagles, but most of those came in the 2nd half with the outcome already in hand.Manning threw for 281 yards, but was sacked four times and threw an interception on the first series that led to an Eagles touchdown.

The New York Giants rank No. 24 in the NFL in total offense (34.8 yards per game) and No. 27 in scoring with 19.5 points per contest.Their defense is No. 24 in points allowed (27 ppg).

Despite all of Giants struggles, there’s no guarantee Atlanta will cover as it attempts to fix its own shortcomings.

The Atlanta Falcons built an 11-point half time lead against the Buccaneers, but their defense failed to get stops as Jameis Winston and company mounted a second-half comeback.Atlanta was fortunate to intercept Winston twice; otherwise, the outcome could have been a different story.

Matt Ryan threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns, but his big day was nearly offset by a defense that allowed Tampa Bay to compile 510 yards of total offense.

We can tell you White is leaning toward the Over, but he has scrutinized Falcons vs. Giants from every angle, crunched the stats, and found a crucial X-factor that will determine the spread outcome. He’s only sharing it at SportsLine.

Atlanta has suffered key losses all season. Deion Jones, Keanu Neal, and Devonta Freeman is the latest. Freeman was placed on injured reserve this past week with a groin injury, which he is undergoing surgery for. Although head coach Dan Quinn emphasized Freeman will still be eligible to return before the season is over, it is unlikely.he will.

Last week, wide receivers Calvin Ridley (ankle) and Mohamed Sanu (hip) were each added to that list when they were injured in a 34-29 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ridley and Sanu did not practice most of last week but returned Saturday, and are now each questionable against New York.

The Giants’ problems intensified last week as wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. once again caused a stir. After being held to just six receptions for 44 yards in an embarrassing 34-13 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6, Beckham Jr. went to the locker room, which ended up being a notable sports media talking point.

Odell’s frustrations, though extra curricular, are justified. The newly signed receiver just wants to win, which has seemed to escape Big Blue the past few seasons. New York has lost three consecutive games, and allowed 30-plus points in each contest. Mounting problems on offense have now leaked to the defense, which performed well to start the season, including a road win against the now-first place Houston Texans.

Giants tight end Evan Engram (knee) has missed the past few weeks, but was taken off the injury report this week. Engram is set to return on Monday night.

Quinn answered questions this week about his team’s running game. “We’re looking forward to attacking it again and we like the plan that we’re putting in place to ensure that we stay committed and have our opportunities to do it,” Quinn said. “We felt more scheme-related and quite honestly some technique things that we felt like we could do better to get our run game to the standard that we have.”

Matt Ryan admits he is still motivated. “When guys do down, other people have to step up and fill the void,” quarterback Matt Ryan said. “He did that for us (Sunday), but he’s done that for us even when those guys are up.”

The Giants in turn are not focused on their 1-5 start. “You definitely can’t dwell on the record so far, but you can use it as fire and motivation to not let any of that happen again and to play even better moving forward,” Giants Will Hernandez told reporters.

But Barkley sees where changes have to be made. “I think I could be more efficient in the run game, continue to grow as a leader, pass pro, everything,” Barkley said. “That’s just kind of how I am. I’m very critical of all the little things and I think I can grow in every part of my game.”

Meanwhile, Donetsk have drawn both group games so far and will be hoping to cause an upset in Kharkiv.

City know Shakhtar’s formidable home form all too well – falling to a 2-1 defeat in last season’s competition. Top of their respective domestic leagues, both will be looking to replicate their form in a game which already seems crucial if either side wants to progress to the last 16.

Likely to be a close affair, here’s everything you need to know ahead of the game.

Two of the most creative outlets likely to be on show, this clash promises be a fascinating one.

Marlos has been ever present for Shakhtar since his arrival in 2014 and has featured in all but one game in all competitions this season.

The Brazilian winger has scored six league goals, behind only striker Junior Moraes, who has netted 12.

Sterling is City’s joint second top scorer in the league has been pivotal in his side’s impressive start in the current campaign.

Although the England international is yet to score in this season’s Champions League, Sterling is a match winner and one of City’s most experienced players in the prestigious competition.

As previously mentioned, both teams are on course to retain their domestic titles. The Ukrainians have won ten of their 12 league games and lead Dynamo Kiev by two points, scoring 31 goals and conceding just six in the process.

While City boast of one Europe’s deadliest strikers in Sergio Aguero, Donetsk’s Junior Moraes has been prolific since his summer move from rivals Kiev. The Brazilian notched a brace in their 2-2 draw with Lyon on match day two and leads the Ukrainian goalscoring charts with an impressive ten goals in 11 league games.

Undefeated in the league, City have carried on from where they left last season and lead Liverpool on goal difference. The Merseyside club are the only team to prevent City from scoring this season.

City’s squad in depth is regarded as one of the best in Europe and will have to be at their best to overcome Donetsk.

Manager Pep Guardiola has named Kevin De Bruyne as part of the 21 man squad. After a two-month injury lay off, the Belgian made his comeback from injury against Burnley and could feature.

Kyle Walker is set to feature in Tuesday’s game, having missed out last Saturday due a knock. Fabian Delph, Ilkay Gundogan and Danilo all miss out and second choice goalkeeper Claudio Bravo remains a long-term injury absentee.

Shakhtar will be without playmaker Taison for a third consecutive game after suffering a ruptured knee ligament at the start of the month. The Brazilian scored in last season’s famous win over Napoli in the group stages.

Midfield duo Maksym Malyshev and Vyacheslav Tankovsky are long-term absentees.

Shakhtar: Pyatov; Ismaily, Matviyenko, Krysvtov, Butko; Maycon, Alan Patrick; Fernando, Marlos, Wellington Nem; Moraes.
